A large horizontal red chalk figure drawing of unusual dynamism — the most physically active pose in the sanguine series. A figure is drawn in an arched-back position: the upper body falling back, the head tilted so the face points upward and to the left, the torso arching, the hips and legs providing the lower structural anchor. This is a pose of opening or abandonment — the body in the moment of leaning back, the chest open, the head released.
The red chalk describes the figure's form with the medium's characteristic warmth, the marks building the body's volume zone by zone. The face in the tilted position — barely visible, the profile shown from below — is the most foreshortened facial view in any figure drawing. The upward tilt of the chin, the visible underjaw, the eye looking up: these are described in very few marks but with structural understanding of the unusual perspective.
The feet at lower right are the most carefully described elements: both feet visible, the toes individually indicated, one foot more weight-bearing than the other. Sidney always came to feet with patient attention.
The overall horizontal orientation of the figure — arching from the left lower corner toward the upper right — gives the composition a diagonal sweep that is the most dynamic in the red chalk group. This is a body in motion or at the edge of motion, caught in the moment before it changes.
