A tiny ink still life on the smallest sheet in the collection — 5.25 by 6.5 inches — depicting what appears to be a group of pillar candles or cylindrical objects standing upright in a barrel or cylindrical container. Five or six rounded-top cylinders emerge from a barrel's upper rim, each described with a single curved top and a narrow wick mark. The barrel below is described with horizontal banding marks indicating its stave construction and two banding rings. The whole arrangement sits on a textured ground — short marks suggesting grass or earth. At the lower right, faint marks that might be an abbreviated signature: .sid.
The subject — candles or cylindrical objects in a barrel — is unusual in the collection. It occupies a different register from the studio still life of Work 1480 (jar, glass, pear) and the object studies of Work 1531 (satchel, stools). This appears to be an outdoor still life — an observed arrangement in a garden, a yard, or a public space — the grass marks suggesting the outdoors. The candles-in-barrel motif has associations with memorials, votive offerings, or communal observance.
The tiny format gives the drawing a quality of a note or a sketch made quickly in passing. The ink is applied with the same confident line as the larger works, the barrel's cylindrical form and the candles' rounded tops described with the economy appropriate to the small scale. If the lower-right mark is indeed a signature (.sid.), it joins the small group of signed works in the portfolio.
