A horizontal composition containing two separate figure studies — the most explicitly multi-figure sheet in the new portfolio. At the lower left, a reclining figure extends horizontally across most of the composition: the head at the left (face visible in brief profile, a circular earring indicated), the torso in left profile, the arms, and the long legs extending to the right with the feet and toes at the lower right. At the upper right, overlapping with the reclining figure's leg zone, a second figure is sketched: a more compressed, seated or crouching form with the back presented, the figure gathered inward.
The two figures on one sheet — drawn as separate studies but cohabiting the composition — create an unusual spatial situation. The reclining figure's legs pass through the space where the second seated figure sits, the two studies occupying different compositional zones but sharing the paper. Whether this represents two poses of the same model or two different moments observed together, the effect is of a figure drawing session preserved as a dual study: time on paper.
The 13.25 by 6.25 horizontal format — wider than tall — accommodates the reclining figure's full extension while the upper zone holds the seated study. The sanguine chalk on warm cream paper gives both figures the same medium's warmth, the red marks connecting the two figures despite their spatial separation.
