A full-length standing figure in blue chalk on warm ochre paper — one of the most extreme narrow formats in the collection, the 6.5 by 14.25 sheet barely wider than a hand. The figure stands in slight three-quarter, the arm raised with the hand at or above the head, the face in partial profile. The long loose hair falls at both sides of the face and below the shoulders. The blue chalk on warm ochre creates the same chromatic relationship as Work 1419 and the early blue chalk series, the cool blue marks reading vividly against the warm ground.
The 6.5 by 14.25 format is the narrowest the collection has offered for a full-length figure — where the 9.5 by 25 strips were narrow-vertical, this format is even more severely constrained. The figure barely fits within the 6.5 inch width, the arms at the sides nearly touching the paper's edges. The extreme verticality focuses attention entirely on the body's height: the figure is a column of blue marks in a warm field.
The warm ochre ground connects this work to the ink portraits on ochre that dominate the large-format portrait series, but here the ochre serves a standing blue chalk figure rather than a portrait. The figure's face in partial profile, the arm raised, the hair loose and falling — these elements are familiar from the figure drawing portfolio but here compressed into the most constrained format the portfolio has offered.
