A seated figure in sanguine chalk — the body in left three-quarter profile, the face in left-facing profile with a brief specific description. The figure is seated with one knee raised, the left arm extending forward, the right arm behind supporting the weight on what appears to be the edge of a surface. At the right of the figure a jacket or garment hangs or drapes from a support — a blocky, folded form with the suggestion of a collar or lapel — introducing fabric into the composition in the manner established by Work 1522's partially clothed figure. The feet are given specific individual-toe treatment at the lower left.
The composition places the seated figure and the hanging jacket in close proximity but without direct physical contact — the jacket seems to be draped on a separate support beside the figure, the two forms in dialogue but not united. This compositional pairing of body and clothing — the person and their garment as separate but proximate elements — is unusual in the figure drawing tradition, where clothing is usually either worn (part of the figure) or absent (nude study). Here it occupies an intermediate position: present but removed, the body and its social covering in the same frame but not yet joined.
The 7.5 by 10 format is among the smaller sheets in the new portfolio, giving the seated figure with its accompanying jacket a compact, concentrated presence. The sanguine chalk on white paper maintains the medium's characteristic warmth, the chalk's flesh-tone quality making the body and the jacket read with the same organic richness despite their different natures.
