A three-quarter right-facing portrait in ink — a young or young-ish figure with short hair and a flat cap or beret at the crown, the cap's rectangular brim at the top edge of the composition and the rounded crown behind it. The ear is visible below the cap, described with careful structural marks. Below the ear the neck descends, and the face to the right is in partial right-profile: the eye visible with the lash, the nose, the lips briefly stated, the chin below. Brief stubble marks at the chin suggest a young male figure. The clothed shoulder and upper chest are indicated below.
The flat cap connects this portrait to the cap series that has run through the collection — Works 1492, 1497, 1502 in the larger formats, and now Work 1547 in the small format. But where those larger portraits gave the cap the compositional space to be a full formal element, here in the 8.25 by 11 format the cap sits at the very top of the paper, its brim nearly at the upper edge, compressed by the small format into a briefer presence. The result is a cap portrait that reads more as a figure with a hat than as a hat dominating a figure.
The chin stubble and the partial right profile give this figure a quality of caught observation — a young man observed from behind and to the left, the cap marking his social type, the chin's brief growth marking his stage of life. The small format suits the quick quality of the observation: a person glimpsed, a few marks sufficient.
