A seated figure in sanguine chalk — the body in back-oblique view, the model partially clothed in what appears to be a jacket or overshirt that is bunched and gathered at the back, the fabric's folds described with brief parallel marks distinct from the surrounding skin. The legs extend forward and to the left, the feet at the lower edge receiving the characteristic specific toe treatment. The figure's right arm extends forward, the hand holding or touching something at the knee. The head in partial profile at the upper right shows the face in a slight left-facing profile.
The partially clothed figure is a rarity in the collection's figure studies — most nude studies are completely nude, and the clothed works are portraits rather than figure studies. Here the jacket or overshirt introduces fabric into what is otherwise an observational session of the body: the folds of the bunched fabric at the back competing compositionally with the smooth skin of the legs and shoulders. This partial clothing gives the figure a quality of caught-in-the-moment: a model who has not fully undressed, or who has begun to redress, the clothing in a state of casual dishevelment.
The small 9.5 by 11.5 format is the most intimate figure-drawing sheet in the new portfolio — smaller than the 12.5 by 19, the 14 by 17, and the large 25 by 19 sheets. The figure is compact within it, the composition gathering the body into the small space without the breathing room of the larger sheets. The sanguine on white paper gives the clothed-and-seated figure the warm chalk quality of the earlier figure studies, the medium unchanged even as the subject introduces a new element.
