A large-format pencil figure study on warm ochre paper — a figure in left profile, leaning forward in a walking or purposeful-stepping posture, with what appears to be a cloth wrap or headscarf tied around the head and trailing behind, the ends of the cloth visible at the right. The face in profile shows the nose and lips in brief indication. The arms are behind the body, the hands not visible. The body is clothed or partially wrapped — the cloth's lines indicating fabric drape rather than the bare skin of the nude studies. The marks are extremely spare: the lightest, most tentative pencil work in the new portfolio's large-format works.
The pencil on the warm ochre ground is barely visible in places — the marks so light against the warm field that the figure approaches the atmospheric transparency of Work 1435's ghost-blue. This lightness is the most characteristic quality of the drawing: a large sheet, a full-figure study, and marks that barely commit to paper. The cloth wrap at the head creates an unusual silhouette — the rectangular mass above the face, the trailing ends to the right — that gives the figure a quasi-historical or ethnographic quality different from the contemporary nude studies.
This is the only clothed full-figure study in the new portfolio — not a portrait bust in clothes (as Works 1477 and 1485) but a complete clothed figure in motion. The wrap and the purposeful forward lean give the figure a quality of movement and destination: this person is going somewhere, not posed for observation. Among all the figures in the new portfolio, this one feels most like a figure glimpsed rather than observed — the light pencil marks, the wrapped head, the forward lean all contributing to the impression of a passing figure caught at the edge of disappearing.
