A reclining figure in blue chalk on the horizontal 19 by 12.5 sheet — seen from the front this time rather than from behind, the body lying with the knees bent and angled to the right, the torso partially propped. The breast in left profile is visible, the body's front presented rather than the back. The legs extend diagonally from upper left to lower right across the horizontal sheet, the knees bent mid-composition, the feet at the lower right given particularly specific toe treatment — each toe described individually with brief marks, the most detailed rendering of the feet in the blue chalk portfolio.
The blue chalk maintains the medium's characteristic cool precision, the lines confident and single-pass for the outer contour with interior marks at the shadow zones beneath the breast and at the knee bend. The body's horizontal extension fills most of the paper's width, the composition balanced between the upper-left torso and the lower-right feet. A brief indication of the ground or surface beneath the figure anchors the body in space.
This is the blue chalk series' first horizontal reclining figure, adding a new pose format to the blue chalk works (which have otherwise been vertical standing or seated figures). The front-facing reclining orientation — seeing the body's front in repose — differs from the back-view recliners of Works 1437, 1478, and the pencil works: the front view reveals the breasts, the belly's curve, the full profile of the body's front surface. The feet at the lower right, with their individual-toe specificity, read as the composition's most animated zone — the body at rest but the feet still detailed.
