A left-facing profile portrait of a woman in a close-fitting cap or beret — the hat drawn as a smooth dome sitting low on the skull, with a small button or clasp at the crown and the brim cutting a clean horizontal line across the forehead. The hat's simple geometry gives the head a distinctive, almost architectural silhouette: the dome of the hat above, the face's organic profile below.
The gaze is directed sharply upward in profile — the eye looking above and ahead, the expression one of alert attention or upward aspiration. The brow above the eye is emphatic, the nose well-described, the lips parted slightly. The neck below the face is clean and simple, the garment barely suggested at the lower edge.
The beret is the collection's second hat in the ink sketchbook sequence (after Work 1387), but where that hat was a flat-brimmed working cap with a brow shadow, this one is a close-fitting dome with an entirely different effect — less shadow, more silhouette, the head becoming a clean shape against the paper. The upward gaze within this contained, shaped silhouette gives the portrait an unusual aspiring quality.
Among the female profiles in the sketchbook sequence, this is the most architecturally shaped — the beret as compositional device, the clean dome and the profile below together creating an image that reads more as design than as observation, though it was clearly both.
