A large horizontal red chalk figure drawing focused on the upper body of a reclining figure seen from behind — the composition built almost entirely from tonal buildup rather than contour. The back, shoulder and arm are described through the accumulation of sanguine marks, the tones building the forms from darkness toward the lighter paper.
This is among the most tonal of the red chalk figures — the characteristic that separates sanguine from the more linear blue pencil is fully exploited here. The red chalk is laid down in multiple passes, each pass deepening the shadow and establishing the form's three-dimensionality.
At the right, the shoulder and arm rise from the tonal mass — the arm extending to the right with the hand visible. At the left, the composition dissolves into lighter marks, the body extending without conclusion.
Small touches of orange and red warm the otherwise sanguine marks — the medium itself providing a slight chromatic variation as different pressures and angles catch the chalk's pigment differently.
