A large horizontal pencil drawing that focuses almost entirely on the head and upper body of a reclining figure — a close-up of the face tilted upward, the eyes looking up with an open, vulnerable expression. This drawing compresses the entire emotional range of the upward-gazing reclining figure into the most tonally rich treatment in the series.
The face is the most elaborately tonal in any reclining figure drawing: the brow shadow, the deep eye socket with the upward-looking eye, the nose foreshortened slightly from this angle, the mouth and chin below. The charcoal or pencil builds genuine three-dimensional form — this face is in light, the upper surfaces brighter, the lower surfaces shadowed.
The hair fans out around the upward face, described in long flowing strokes that radiate from the crown. At the upper right, an arm or another body element is barely indicated — the drawing having been framed tightly around the face.
The upward gaze carries the same openness as the reclining figures with direct gazes — a face exposed and present, looking toward the light or toward Sidney above.
