A large red chalk seated back-view figure drawing of exceptional purity — a single continuous contour line tracing the outer form from the crown, around the shoulder and back, along the hip and leg. The interior is almost entirely empty, the form defined only by its edge. This is contour drawing as primary commitment in the sanguine medium.
The hair at the crown is the most loosely described element — brief looping marks indicating texture without belaboring it. Below the hair, the nape and the upper back begin the long contour descent: shoulder, back, waist, hip, leg.
At the lower left, the foot is given individual toe attention, the characteristic Cothran specificity at the extremities even within a drawing of maximum economy.
The red chalk on the warm cream paper gives the single contour line its characteristic warmth. The form defined only by its edge glows against the ground — the body as a heat signature, a red line in cream space.
