A pencil figure drawing with the inscription "'Nellie'" at the lower right — a second confirmed named model in the life drawing collection, the first being Mary Mangashin (1111). The model sits with the arm raised and the hand resting on the head, the face looking directly out at Sidney — the most direct gaze in the named figure drawings.
The face is described with the most tonal pencil work in any figure drawing: the brow and brow ridge, the eyes set beneath them, the nose and mouth below — all built through overlapping shadow marks. The face is a real face, a specific person's specific features, seen and recorded.
The raised arm — the elbow visible at the upper right, the hand resting on the head — creates the composition's secondary element. The body from neck to chest is described below the face.
The hair above the face falls loosely on both sides — long, parallel strokes describing the hair's direction. The inscription "'Nellie'" is in quotation marks, as if it might be a nickname or an artistic title rather than a legal name — or perhaps Sidney's way of noting an uncertainty.
Two named models now: Mary Mangashin and Nellie. Sidney's life drawing practice had both anonymous and named participants.
