A large pencil figure drawing — a figure seated on a model stand, seen in profile from the right. The most striking element is the hair: long, falling freely to below the shoulder, drawn in the most sustained long-hair description in the figure drawings. Each strand is individually described in long parallel pencil strokes that follow the hair from crown to tip, the overall mass built from dozens of marks.
The face in profile is the most tonally described in any pencil figure drawing: the shadow under the brow, around the eye socket, at the cheek and jaw all built from multiple overlapping marks. The face has genuine three-dimensional modeling — this is not a line drawing but a tonal study.
The model stand below is partially described at the lower right: its rectangular edge visible, the seat surface suggested. The arm resting on the stand is the most active element of the body below the face.
At the lower composition, the feet — crossed, relaxed — are described with the characteristic toe-by-toe attention. The feet on the stand's surface give the figure its physical grounding.
