A full seated figure in red chalk — the complete figure from crown to crossed feet visible in the composition. The pose is the most self-contained in the red chalk series: the arms crossed at the chest, the legs crossed at the ankle below, the figure forming a series of interlocking diagonals that create internal rhythm within the upright composition.
The face is described with more attention than in most sanguine figures: the brow and the downcast eyes, the nose, the set of the lips — all indicating a person absorbed in private thought. The hair gathered at the top of the head in a small tight bun is described with the compact marks of an upswept style.
The crossing of both arms and legs creates the composition's formal argument: this figure is gathered inward, all the limbs folding toward the body's center. The crossed arms create a horizontal band across the chest; the crossed legs create a diagonal at the lower composition. Together they establish a figure that is present but self-contained.
The feet at the bottom — crossed, the toes of both feet described individually — are the most relaxed element: whatever self-containment the arms suggest, the feet have simply found a comfortable position.
