A large ink profile portrait of a man with a full beard — the most extensively described beard in the collection. Seen in pure left profile, the face is a strong profile of angular character: a defined brow, a prominent nose, the lips barely parted. The beard covers the lower face entirely, rendered in multiple overlapping hatching marks that build its texture: short at the upper regions, longer at the chin, the individual hairs suggested through the variation in mark direction.
The hair at the crown is thinning and swept back, described with a few bold strokes. At the back and sides, longer hair begins to merge with the beard, the connection between the two described with a fringe of marks along the jaw and neck.
At the collar, a detailed rendering of a garment: a turtleneck or high collar emerging below the beard, its ribbed texture indicated with closely spaced horizontal marks. This is the most specifically described collar material in the ink portrait series.
The ear at center-right — seen in profile — is given the characteristic Cothran attention. The overall portrait has the quality of a person encountered and drawn quickly but thoroughly, the beard the memorable element.
